Reader Comments on True Friends

From Letters to the Author

It was great! I usually don’t read, but I read this book. I liked the way the story was and the characters. I absolutely loved this book.

I recently read your book, True Friends. And I want to thank you for this amazing book. It really opened my eyes to see how things were back in the early 1900s. The way the characters acted seemed so believable like these were real people.

-Conner, 5th grade

The book is about life during World War I, and I love reading about that stuff. I’m glad Annie told I. E. to take a hike. If I were in her shoes, I would be using I. E.’s hair to string up a hammock.

-Peter, 7th grade

True Friends was a nice book and delightful to read. I liked the unique personalities of each person. It was one of the best books I’ve ever read.

-Brittany, 6th grade

True Friends was a marvelous book because it had some action, drama, and sadness in it. I think that is just a great book! I usually don’t read, but this was one of the few books I liked.

-Michael, 7th grade

Things I liked about your book were how Annie changed. When she helped her family was amazing to me, also how she stood up for herself.

-Austin, 5th grade

It teaches people that no matter what someone looks like on the outside, they’re probably different on the inside. This book is good because it informs people of how life was in the past. I think this book was more for girls, but it is still very good.

-Hayden, 7th grade

I liked the book a lot. I liked all the characters. My favorite part was when Annie tried sewing.

-Eric, 5th grade

I liked your book because it was funny, surprising, and sad at the same time. I hope you write a second book to True Friends.

-Kory, 5th grade

I liked the book because Annie was a tomboy and sorta changed her look and attitude toward things. I also liked the way the Davises treated the maid.

-Jhanna, 6th grade

One thing I found interesting in your book was one of the main characters dies. That usually doesn’t seem to happen. Another thing is your book was good. It seemed to be based on a true story. I really enjoyed it.

-Nick, 5th grade

I liked the setting in my hometown and how everybody got sick and the two middle children took care of themselves and the rest of the family.

-Brandon, 6th grade

I’m a boy. I’ve just read "True Friends." It was the best book I’ve ever read. I liked that Annie is a tomboy.

We read "True Friends" at school and I wish I could keep the book so my parents could read it. I loved the part where Annie’s tomboy influence got the best of her. It is the best book I have ever read.

Three things I liked about your book are that Annie can relate to us with becoming a proper girl, that the setting was in the past, and that there were serious parts and funny parts.

-Rebecca, 5th grade

I enjoyed the book very much. One part I liked was when Annie tries to become a proper lady and still has trouble with it. Another part was when Annie snuck out with Iris Elizabeth to Forest Hill.

-Angela, 5th grade

We recently read your book in history class. All of us loved it. It was fun to learn about the time period of the story. I liked the relationship with the boys and Annie.

I enjoyed the lesson this book has and its sense of humor. The fact that this is based on 1918 Memphis gives the story a state of constant excitement. This was one of the best books I’ve read. If you write a sequel, it would be a hit.
